New Lit Blog

tirsdag 07. juni 2011, kl. 21.14 · av Emily Williams for Snakker ikke norsk · 0 kommentarer

What is a new narrative? Karina Mahan, Editor-in-Chief of a new student-published literary blog called New Narratives, gives one definition: it is a new perspective, something that maybe a lot of people don’t want to hear, but needs to be said.

“Good literature deserves to be read”: so goes the first line of the New Narratives manifesto. This blog is a project that wishes to find those great books which have not gotten the attention they deserve, and promote them through articles written by students from the University of Oslo with a passion for reading. Many narratives are unheard because they deal with sticky subjects like multiculturalism; they deviate from an unspoken norm which has been set by the dead, white guys which have shaped literary canon today.

The people behind New Narratives are just as diverse and multicultural as the books they write about. Mahan and one of her editors, Melvin Chen, discussed how they experience having a “hybrid identity”—being Norwegian-American and biracial Singaporean, respecively—which is namely the theme of New Narratives’ first quarterly publiction. Listen to the interview:

The release date is set for June 15, and on this same day there will be a Release Party in Glassbaren at Det Norske Studentersamfund (Chateau Neuf) starting at 20:00. It will be open for everyone, so come and meet the people behind this new, exciting blog. You can also inquire about volunteering to work for the online publication yourself: they need more editors, an events coordinator, and someone with experience in blogging/Wordpress. New Narratives is on Facebook, and if you Like them you’ll get updates about the publication and events they put on.

Also on this week’s show, we presented another epic battle in our regular segment Norway vs. The World. Norway faced its North American doppelganger: Canada. Does this bland and gray behemoth to the West have what it takes to compete with the formidible former Viking country of Norway? Our own Canadian reporter Peter Schnare brought us the answer.

And as there were only men in the studio, we had a special edition of Weird News: Man News! If you missed it on Sunday, listen to the re-run in the Repriser player.
